I used to teach healthy cooking classes at a shelter in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. There were so many people in each class with untreated and undertreated diabetes because they could not access proper medical care.
Each person had worsening issues as a result of their inability to manage diabetes effectively, including liver disease, being wheelchair bound, and amputations. This makes it more difficult to get and keep a job, to care for one's family, and to get off assistance.
